Town centres - shop front improvement grants
Merthyr Tydfil Building Enhancement Grants

Building Enhancement Grants (BEG’s) are available to businesses located in Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre. The scheme aims to enhance the appearance of shop fronts by raising standards of design that relate to the town's historic architecture.  As a result,  achievements contribute to the general environment and enhancement of the area.

Grant eligibility is for renovations and improvements to external street frontages of buildings which are inkeeping with the age and style of the property.

A study carried out by Davies Sutton Architecture may assist with recommendations to many town centre business premises.  Recommendation sheets and drawings are available on request.

In 2011-12 the priority areas in Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre are:
• Pontmorlais
• Upper and Lower High Street
• John Street
• Victoria Street
• Glebeland Street

BEGs are administered by MTCBC's Physical Regeneration team however grant funding is limited as there is a high demand for financial assitance from the Council. As a result, all applications will have to meet a set of defined criteria and are subject to the availability of funds.

All work is to be carried out to a high standard to improve the look of the building.

BEG's offer up to a maximum of 50% grant assitance although in excpetional circumstances this may be increased to a maximum of 80%.

Types of works that are supported include hardwood box sash windows, doors, shop front replacements, re-rendering, external cleaning/painting, external brickwork/stonework repairs and renewal of roofs, chimneys and guttering.
