The Welsh Assembly Government Primary School Free Breakfast Initiative
The Welsh Assembly Government made a commitment to provide for all children of primary school age registered in maintained primary schools in Wales to have a free, healthy breakfast at school each day. It will allow those that, for whatever reason, have not had breakfast, to have one in school.
Restricting the initiative to Primary Schools is principally intended to ensure not only that our youngest children are given a flying start in life, but also to ensure that the increasing practice of skipping breakfast is stemmed at the earliest possible age.
Breakfast has long been recognised as the most important meal of the day and evidence shows that a healthy breakfast is linked to better health, concentration and behaviour in children.
Experience has also shown that successful breakfast schemes in schools have led to positive attitudinal changes - improved attendance, improved behaviour, fewer discipline problems and greater sustained concentration.
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council School Catering Service is committed to providing a free breakfast for all primary school children, 27 breakfast clubs have been set up in schools by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council School Catering Service with the help of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government.
