Background to 14-19 Learning Pathways

The Merthyr Tydfil 14-19 Network was established in 2003 with the aim of widening the academic and vocational curriculum choices available to learners, whilst ensuring they have appropriate support and guidance to choose the most suitable learning pathway available to them. This Welsh Government agenda is set out in the Learning and Skills (Wales) Measure 2009.

How this is Achieved
This wider range of options has been achieved through collaborative working between the local high schools and other local learning providers such as Merthyr Tydfil College, Merthyr Tydfil College Work Based Learning Unit, the Transition Into Employment Programme and the Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community project.  All partners work together to ensure that the best possible choice and quality of courses are available to learners. 

In order to meet the Learning and Skills Measure, all high schools in Merthyr Tydfil must offer as part of the local curriculum a choice of;

• 30 Level 2 courses in Years 10/11
• 30 Level 3 courses in Year 12/13

In addition, there are also a range of Entry Level and Level 1 vocational courses offered to Year 10/11 learners in Merthyr Tydfil.

Role of the 14-19 Network Team
The 14-19 Network Team within the Local Authority is responsible for co-ordinating the pre and post 16 collaborative course provision, working closely with the schools and other learning providers to track learner progress and ensure that suitable support mechanisms are in place.
