Disabled people - parking bays

Blue Badge Scheme

Anyone with a Blue Badge can use a Disabled Persons parking bay.

The Blue Badge Scheme provides a national arrangement of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties which travel either as drivers or passengers.

Merthyr Tydfil town centre car parks all offer disabled persons parking bays which are designed to enable Blue Badge Holders to park as close to their destination as possible.

These bays can be found in:

  • the Castle
  • College
  • Pontmorlais
  • Tramroad
  • Gilar Street

Additionally there is the Swan Street car park which is designated for the sole use of Blue Badge Holders and has several 'wheelchair user' only bays.

When using the Council car parks Blue Badge holders should also note that they are not exempt from any charges and therefore will need to purchase a parking ticket at a machine and display it in the vehicle alongside your blue badge.

The blue badge should also be visible with the front of the badge (i.e. the side showing the wheelchair-user symbol and expiry date) facing forward so that these details are legible from the outside of the vehicle.

NB. The badges should not be used if the badge holder is not with the vehicle.

For further information in relation to parking in the Council Car Parks please Tel Parking Enquiries (01685) 725282/726285.

To apply for a badge please contact the Council's Social Services Department on the number below.
