To conform with EU legislation the maximum permitted weight of lorries was increased firstly to 40 tonnes in 1999 and then to 44 tonnes in 2001.
Commencing in the early 1990’s, all older highway bridges have been assessed to find out whether they are capable of taking these increased lorry weights safely.
The assessment programme identified a small number of substandard bridges unable to carry the full loading. Most of the substandard bridges have now been strengthened but in order to maintain public safety, weight limits have been introduced on two bridges, one owned by Network Rail, pending the availability of sufficient funding to upgrade the structures.
