Any persons wishing to drive a private hire vehicle must first hold a private hire drivers licence from the Local Authority.
The legislation relating to private hire drivers is contained within the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 and within the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.
It is illegal to drive a private hire vehicle without the appropriate licence and badge issued to you by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.
Making An Application
Before a licence is issued the Council have to determine whether or not the applicant is a "fit and proper person" under the terms of the Act to hold a licence. This involves a series of tests and checks being carried out with various organisations so that the Council can determine each application fairly and consistently.
All applicants are required to undergo checks with the DVLA and Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS), complete the Council's medical certificate with their GP and are required to pass the DSA taxi driving test.
If you require further information and/or a drivers application pack please contact the Licensing Section.
