Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council offers a business support package to help you realise your full potential. Whether you have an idea for a business start-up, wish to expand an existing business in the area, improve your efficiency or introduce some new technology, there could be a grant to help you.

The Authority has received support from the European Regional Development Fund towards a new funding programme called the South East Wales Local Investment Fund (LIF). Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council along with 5 other Local Authorities in South East Wales have been awarded funding to assist businesses located or locating in the area.

To qualify, businesses must be a Small or Medium Sized Enterprise (SME). An SME is defined as:

a company with fewer than 250 employees; and
either an annual turnover not exceeding EUR 40 million, or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding EUR 27 million; and
not more than 25% of the capital or voting rights is owned by an enterprise which is not itself an SME.

The business must be an SME (under 250 employees) in the manufacturing sector, services to manufacturing, business-to-business service sector or tourism. Local services such as shops and consumer services are not eligible.

The Local Investment Fund can provide up to 35% of eligible expenditure up to a maximum of £5,000 (minimum grant £1,000). The applicant is required to provide a business plan with a minimum of one-year cashflow forecast and projected profit and loss (support to put this information together is available from the Welsh Assembly Government through Flexible Support for Business) business-support-wales.gov.uk/. Two years historic accounts (management accounts if over 6 months old) and two comparable quotes are also required. Other factors considered include: - jobs, investment by private sector, value for money and demonstrate for the need for a grant.

All funding is discretionary and eligibility criteria will apply.
