Newland Park

Merthyr Tydfil CBC's Public Rights of Way Section officially launched a set of interpretation panels at Newland Park, Penydarren along with a set of local walk leaflets on Tuesday 12th June. The event was attended by His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Allan Jones and Mayoress Anne Jones, as well as members of the public, and members of the Local Access Forum and the Bio-Diversity Partnership.
The Park, which is adjacent to Penydarren High Street, was the home of the famous Dowlais White Tip, which was one of the oldest tips in town dating back to the earliest days of iron making in the late 18th Century.
The interpretation panels provide information on the history of the Park up until the present day, where it is now an appealing park area with four newly created Public Rights of Way, which provide enjoyable and easy to use urban footpaths, and gives you the opportunity to take in some breathtaking views of Merthyr Tydfil.
The Park area is also home to woodland blocks, grassland, two ponds and two area of developing heath. There is a small car park adjacent to the site and two bus stops to improve accessibility for those who don't live close to the park.
Councillor Brendan Toomey, Cabinet Member for Customer Corporate Services commented: "I am delighted to witness today what has been achieved by the Rights of Way Division at Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council as a result of partnership working between the Arts, Leisure and Tourism Section and Safer Merthyr Tydfil".
Councillor Toomey continued: "The launch of the interpretation panels at Newland Park, in addition to the set of local walk leaflets which have recently been produced, is definitely a step in the right direction to promoting the Rights of Way within the County Borough".
