Mentoring Programme

Gymnastics

Gymnastics has featured strongly on DC plans. Primary partners highlighted this area due to its safety implications with staff feeling less confident in delivering it than other areas.

A mentoring programme has improved teacher skills and confidence in delivering gymnastics which features the secondary specialist staff team teaching with their primary colleagues. The secondary PE departments are seeing an improvement in pupil attainment when they enter into year 7. Good practitioners from the primary schools are now being identified and trained as mentors to work with colleagues who need additional support.

The following resource was initially written for year 6 pupils as a transition unit of work. Due to the PESS National project, it is now more suitable for key stage one pupils.

PESS Gymnastics National Project

The PESS gymnastics philosophy has been developed into a scheme of work from year 1 - year 6 introducing the body schooling activities and foundation shapes in key stage one, moving onto foundation positions additional body schooling games and activities. Foundation skills are introduced in upper key stage two. This is being rolled out across DC schools as three separate modules.

All new units of work developed in Merthyr Tydfil are shared across DC'. The units reflect the PESS innovative style of teaching gymnastics but also are enriched by other styles of teaching the activity. The resources compiled so far are available to download. Full recognition goes to UWIC and the PE & School Sport project for the unit ideas.

Using ICT in Physical Education

Caedraw Primary school has used the Digital Blue Movie Creator to enhance their work in gymnastics. Pupils have been trained by their teacher to use the camera in lessons to record eachothers work for peer assessment analysis and improvement. A lap top is set up in the school hall and children freely capture video, download onto the laptop and thus improve their performance through observation.

The children at the school have presented at conferences for ESIS (the schools advisory service for Merthyr Tydfil) and the PE & School Sport Project ICT in Physical Education Conference at UWIC as an example of good practice. The children put a Powerpoint presentation together and delivered it to PE professionals using excellent communication skills.

All Merthyr Tydfil Primary schools now have a Digital Movie Creator, thanks to our ICT Education Advisor.

Mentoring Programme

A revised and more structured approach towards the mentoring support program will be followed from the Autumn term 2005. Each new unit of work will begin with an introductory half day session for staff to ensure they have all the necessary information and resources for the forthcoming lessons.

This will then be followed by an individual consultation meeting with the mentor and mentee to plan their support program together. Staff will choose how much or little support they would like over the 6 week unit.

The unit of work will then be team taught between the mentor and mentee using the newly written unit and teaching resources.

Following the unit of work, the mentor and mentee will conduct a review and development meeting to evaluate the unit, the mentoring process and how each person can further develop their skills and expertise.
