Ethnic Minority Achievement and English as an Additional Language (EAL)Merthyr Tydfil has representatives from a wide range of minority ethnic groups. Presently, there are as many as 18 different languages spoken by our pupils. Last year 112 pupils were from a minority ethnic background and 82 had English as an additional language.
The ICS aims to provide schools with support in several key areas:
- Meet the particular needs of pupils for whom English is an additional language
- Raising the attainment of minority ethnic pupils, including those for whom English is an additional language
- Ensure schools are meeting their duties under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 by developing provision for race equality and cultural diversity
- Organising and providing English Additional Language training for teachers and support assistants
Schools are provided with packages which include support for teaching and learning.
