Role of Local Education AuthorityChildren and young people who are looked after, in process of being looked after or are ceasing to be looked after by the Local Authority are notified to the LACES Project. A Database is then maintained, based on information received from the Social Services and data gathered from schools. The database assists in monitoring the progress and performance of the children and young people concerned.
The LACES Project will ensure the best outcomes for these children and young people by fulfilling the following:
- Each school will have a Designated Teacher.pdf [11k] for Looked After Children who will be entitled to training and support.
- Each school will have a written policy emphasising its commitment to raising achievement with this group of children and outlining its strategies for both pastoral and curriculum support.
- The project will provide advice and guidance to schools as well as direct support to pupils both in terms of their social, emotional and academic development.
- Each Looked After Child will have a Personal Education Plan (PEP).pdf [128k] which sets clear long and short-term targets for their progress and performance. The children themselves share responsibility in devising these plans.
- Members of the project team will liaise with Social Services in all educational issues and in supporting carers to promote the educational well being of Looked After Children.
- Effective networks and liaison with neighbouring authorities will be established to promote the sharing of best practice. These networks should ensure that educational provision is secured effectively for children placed outside of the county borough.
- Multi-agency training will be co-ordinated to ensure that all professionals are updated on current practice and legislation.
