Street Based Youth Services Street-Based Youth Services team encompass a variety of youth work styles which involve engaging with young people on their own terms and in places decided upon by the young people. The Street-Based team works on the ethos of actively encouraging young people who are not engaging with other forms of youth provision, to engage with them in a different way. As such we work using a mobile outreach provision and detached youth work team.
The mobile provision is based at the Information Shop with the Outreach Youth Work team in Merthyr town centre. Face to face work with young people is undertaken from a fit for purpose twenty-five foot bus. The mobile provision works in many communities within the Merthyr Tydfil where currently there is no other Youth Service provision such as a youth club or drop-in centre.
The team runs a variety of activities designed to connect with young people in accordance with the Youth Service Curriculum Statement in a comfortable environment and place of safety. The Outreach Team undertakes work to find out the opinions of young people about the service and how we might adapt to better suit their needs. The service also manages three Detached Youth Work teams, which work exclusively in several communities. These are in Dowlais and Pant, Treharris and Trelewis, and Troed-y-Rhiw. Detached and Outreach Youth Work differs in that Detached Youth Workers are not aligned to a particular youth work provision such as a Youth Club, Drop-In Centre or Community Centre. Detached and Outreach Youth Workers undertake the same methods of work in their delivery of service to young people.
