H4A - Head For Arts

Community Arts in the Heads of The Valleys

A TOTAL of £125,000 is being invested in new community arts provision across the Heads of the Valleys.

While the local authorities serving this South Wales area have developed community arts programmes, there has never been enough money to sustain them.

The new funding is from the Arts Council of Wales’ pot from the Welsh Assembly Government. Last December, ACW invited organisations who felt they could deliver the Arts Council’s vision for the area to apply for funding.

The successful organisation is H4A - Head For Arts, a partnership of four local authorities working together: Merthyr Tydfil, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Caerphilly.

Heritage Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas said, “Participation in creative activity can develop individuals and communities, by bringing people together, developing skills, and working together. For many individuals it will also be the route into experiencing and enjoying wider cultural activity.
“I am delighted the consortium of four local authorities will be working together to deliver this new service.”

ACW chief executive Peter Tyndall said, “ACW wanted to make sure community arts investment went to areas where it could make the biggest difference.”

Head For Arts plans to spend the first year focusing on developing community theatre.
