Case Study

A coincidental link

We all like to find a famous person among our ancestors and this month I have had that pleasure.

An issue of the "Practical Family History" magazine had an article about the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and its founder Sir Fabian Arthur Goulstone.

Since my husband's maternal grandfather was named Arthur Goldstone and I have traced his family back to Bristol and Long Ashton, I decided it would be worth spending some time researching Sir Fabian's background.

As the table below shows, I found that Sir Fabian's great-great grandfather and my husband's great-great-grandfather were brothers

William Goulstone born 1748 at Bristol married Bila Wright born 1779 at Wooton-under-Edge

Their children were...

  1. William b 1772 @ Bristol Married (1) Esther Jones at Llandovery. She died ater the birth of Louisa Wright Goulstone. Marriage (2) to Sarah Evans at Llangunnar. They had 9 children, the 3rd of whom was John Griffith Goulstone who married Elizabeth Price at Abergavenny. They had 12 children, the last of whom was Arthur Goulstone. He married Fanny Winter at West Derby and had 5 children, the 1st of whom was Emily, my husband's mother.
  2. Thomas born 1774
  3. George born 1776 at Long Ashton married Sarah Gordon c1795. Their son William George born 11/4/1796 married Elizabeth Hill on 8/4/1819. They had 11 children. The 7th of which was Amy Carew Goulstone. She married Charles Ware at Clifton, and Fabian was their son
