Library buildings and opening times

The Central Library is the main service point for the County Borough and the headquarters for the service as a whole. For a map - click here

The Central Library has the widest range of stock and services and the largest turnover of visitors and regular users. It holds the main collection of local studies material for the local authority and attracts many family and local history users and a range of special film readers and printers.

The public computer network provided at Merthyr Tydfil is especially well used for “drop in” by local people and visitors and use of those machines is at a level that requires an IT management system call iCAM.

Self-service provision for return and borrowing has allowed an earlier start at 8.30 am and other self-service options include colour and black and white copiers. The overall modernisation of libraries is also reflected in new forms of service to users that goes beyond the traditional interactions demanded by the manual systems we used before 2003. The Central Library is currently the base for deliveries to special needs (generally housebound) customers.

Dowlais Community Library

Dowlais is the oldest library in the County Borough still open for public use.

The building recently had a new lease of life due to the popularity of the displays in the John A. Owen Exhibition Room, free Internet facilities and various classes.

In respond to increased demand, Dowlais Library opening hours have been increased by over five hours.

Treharris Community Library

Treharris is the next oldest Carnegie funded building still in service in the County Borough (after Dowlais) and was officially opened on October 20, 1909.

To improve access and facilities in the basement area we have added a toilet for disabled use and new access point from the library to the new public car park to the rear of the building

A new IT training room has doubled the public Internet PCs available in this area to 14. Facilities in the training area include a Braille printers
