How to join the library

Library membership is open to anyone who lives or works in the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil.

You don't have to actually join the library to enjoy many services we offer - these include displays, newspapers, reference books, information leaflets and other services freely available in all libraries.

However, having our library card brings many benefits and bonuses - and joining has never been easier, especially on the Mobile Libraries.

We only need to be sure of who you are for you to be able to borrow books, tapes and other lending items and use our FREE Internet service.

If you live in the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil

We prefer to have proof of your name and address - usually something official like a utility bill or driver's licence, but other forms of identity (like a debit or credit card) can be used along with a current entry in the electoral register. It is even easier if we already know you!

If you don't live locally, but work or stay here.

We certainly will need official proof of who you are and your home address. We will also accept confirmation of your address from your employer .

We may check with your local library before we let you join.

If you are under 18

Anyone under 18 normally has to have a "guarantor". We only need proof of the guarantor's identity.

We define a "guarantor" as anyone who is responsible for the person who wants to join - parents, grandparents, guardians, carer, etc.

If you are under 18, but have left home, we would need to see some proof of that - for example, a rent book.

Actually joining

All you need to do is to visit the library, fill in a simple application form and wait a few minutes while we prepare your card.

Alternatively, you can use the online application form and we will have your card ready for you when you visit the library. You always need proof of identity to collect any library cards retained by us for any reason.

Whichever way you choose to join, you will receive a personal library card with a unique number that allows you access to lending services, our public Internet machines and online information resources available from your work or home computer as part of our "virtual library" service.

Once you have joined Merthyr Tydfil Library Service you can use your card in any one of the three library buildings, or on the two Mobile vans - or all of them, if you wish!

The following files are downloadable in .pdf format, you will require the free download of Adobe Reader to view them.

Download this Membership Form.pdf [50k] and post it to us at the following address: (no stamp required)

Merthyr Tydfil Public Library Service, Freepost, Central Library, High Street, Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 8AF.

You can also join using an online option here

In both cases you will need to bring some proof of identity when you call to start your active membership of the service
