Read a million words!

Building Words

The 'Building Words Mural' competition was initiated by the Library Services in partnership with the local schools who joined the Basic Skills, 'Read a Million Words' initiative.

Nineteen schools participated in the Borough, ranging from Infant to High Schools were received competition entry forms.  Children were asked to tell us their favourite line from a book they have read.

A banenr was created using a selection of the hundreds of entries we received.  Mo Dawes of Arts & Crafts had a difficult time making a decision.  Runner-up quotes include,

'The sheep looked very happy just sitting in the grass,' - Kipper by Mick Inkpen

'But now my tummy's beginning to rumble
My favourite food is Gruffalo crumble!' - The Gruffalo by Julie Donaldson

'The smallest angels of them all painted stripes on bumblebees' - Johnny Busani by Marni McGee

However, after much deliberation Mo chose the following quote by Lucy from Mount Pleasant Primary School as the winner -

'I am your Hairy Godmother said the enormous spider - follow me.'

Mo worked for two days with all the children at the school to produce this beautiful piece of artwork.  Made up of many of the suggested quotes, the mural displays the final word count - all of which contribute to reaching a million words!
