Aims and Objectives of the Library Service

Our main objective is to meet the requirements of the Public Library and Museums Act of 1964 as outlined in the Welsh Assembly Government standards, 2001. Under the terms of the Act we must provide a comprehensive and efficient library service for all persons desiring to make use of it. Specific targets are as follows

  1. To provide for the library needs of all local adults and children in the areas of education and private study, information, recreation and cultural activities.
  2. To supply library users with a comprehensive range of stock and information on any past, present and planned items in print.
  3. To ensure equality of opportunity to all users whatever their race, income, sexuality, educational levels or special needs.
  4. To meet and exceed national and local service standards for libraries.
  5. To provide a network of libraries and “library-links” to enable adults and children to readily access library services, and, whenever resources permit, supply loan collections to sheltered housing and a personal visiting service to those unable to use core library services.
  6. To provide a comprehensive “Information” collection at the Central Library and deal with reference enquiries quickly and efficiently - whether by personal visits, post, electronic means, fax or telephone.
  7. To collect, retain and disseminate all information of local interest, including photographs, newspapers, maps, microform and electronic forms.
  8. To provide free Internet use including comprehensive options for those with special needs.
  9. To create a range of online services available 24 hours a day, including access to library catalogues and options to reserve and renew stock.
  10. To ensure that the public are fully aware of services offered by the library and are encouraged to make the fullest use of library and information services.
  11. To organise exhibitions, displays and other activities to exploit the library collection and emphasis the role of the library as a centre of cultural activity.
  12. To co-operate with other library authorities in order to improve local and national services, especially regarding resource discovery and sharing.
  13. To retrain and re-equip staff to meet current service demands and future needs.
  14. To work with local, regional and national partners to improve service development and delivery, including the increased use of suitable volunteers to extend the delivery of certain services.

We believe that our “small and friendly” approach is our greatest single strength and allows us to be flexible and responsive to local needs - your needs.
