Books in other languagesMerthyr Tydfil Public Library provides many services for guests and new inhabitants.
The Paul Hamlyn Foundation is supporting us with a grant that is funding a range of local activities to welcome including a Christmas party for local children and other initiatives to welcome people into the community.
More information is currently available in Portuguese as the Polish workforce is a more recent change. Work is currently underway to increase the range information in Polish and other languages and to support settlement in the area.
What the Library offers:
Information
The library service currently has application forms and key facts about library services in English, Welsh and Portuguese and is shortly adding to the range of languages available
Thanks to a CyMAL grant, the library has a free audio disc describing basic service in English, Welsh, Portuguese, French and German.
Each library has an aid for staff in the form of key phrases in Polish or Portuguese.
Most library staff have attended induction classes to aid us to understand the Portuguese language and customs
Learning English
The library service is increasing its range of material to help people learning English and members of staff have made presentation at local classes and will be happy to provide support and advice to learners.
Recreational reading
The bulk of library members who are less confident with their English are either from Poland or Portugal and we have growing collections of material from both countries.
We also have some material in other languages and will be happy to make what provision we can of new material to anyone who lives or works in Merthyr Tydfil.
