Bibliotherapy

The Welsh Assembly Government is promotes a national scheme in collaboration with the Local Health Boards and public libraries.

Health professionals are encouraged to "prescribe" books in place of or as well as medicines.

The core stock is about personal well-being, but also includes recommended books on heart disease, strokes, diabeties and other conditions.

The collection includes the following titles:

Overcoming Anxiety  by Helen Kennerley

“A whole range of anxieties and fears are explained, from panic attacks and phobias to 'burn out'. It includes an introduction to the nature of anxiety and stress and a complete self-help programme” Constable & Robinson

Overcoming Depression  by Paul Gilbert

“Serious depression can make the world a hostile place, full of frustration and disappointment. This internationally acclaimed book explains what is known about all kinds of depression and shows how mind and body can interact to provoke it. The book is in three sections: the first explains the causes of depression, the second provides provides step-by-step strategies and the third considers related issues such as shame, anger, approval, perfectionism and guilt.”

'I strongly recommend this book as a workbook to accompany therapy or as a first choice for bibliotherapy for depressed patients.' Ed Watkins, Institute of Psychiatry, London, Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy

'Highly accessible to the intelligent layperson, very readable and extraordinarily useful.' Robert L Leahy, Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy, USA. Constable & Robinson

Mind Over Mood by Dennis Greenberger &  Christine Padesky

“Developed by two master clinicians with extensive experience in cognitive therapy treatment and training, this popular workbook shows readers how to improve their lives using cognitive therapy--one of the most effective and widely practiced forms of psychotherapy. The book is designed to be used alone or in conjunction with professional treatment. Step-by-step worksheets teach specific skills that have helped thousands of people conquer depression, panic attacks, anxiety, anger, guilt, shame, low self-esteem, eating disorders, substance abuse and relationship problems.” Review

Overcoming Anger and Irritability by Will Davies

“This is a self-help manual for those who find that they are spoiling the lives of both themselves and those around them with their almost constant irritability and flashes of bad temper. It speaks to those who often find themselves saying and doing things they later regret. It will help the reader understand why such behaviour occurs and what can be done to prevent it. Like all the Overcoming guides it takes a positive approach for which the long-term goal in this case is lasting ‘good temper’ and also looks at how best to handle situations which would tax even the most good-natured person!”. Constable & Robinson

Overcoming Panic  by Derrick Silove

“An indispensable guide for those affected by panic and/or associated agorphobia, their friends and families, psychologists and those working in the medical profession. It explains the many forms and causes of panic and contains a complete self-help program and monitoring sheets, based on clinically proven techniques of cognitive behaviour therapy.”
