Racism

It is easy to forget how often children are often the victims of racism and how important it is for them to understand why people are sometimes so "nasty" to them because of the colour or their skin or country of origin.

Racism explained to my daughter by Tahar Ben Jelloun. New Press, 2006.

"When Ben Jelloun took his ten-year-old daughter to a street protest against anti-immigration laws in Paris, she asked question after question: "What is racism? What is an immigrant? What is discrimination?" Out of their frank discussion comes this book, an international best-seller translated into twenty languages. Included are personal essays from four prize-winning writers and educators who are parents as well: Patricia Williams, David Mura, William Ayers and Lisa D. Delpit. Winner of the United Nations Global Tolerance Award, Racism Explained to My Daughter has been cited as an "excellent tool to fight racism" (Le Monde), and "clear, powerful, and right on target" (Elle).
