Reader' Day

Saturday 25th march 2006 saw the first joint Readers' Day linked to Estyn Allan, consisting of library members from 8 neighbouring library authorities in the South-East Wales area (including Merthyr Tydfil).

The event was held at St. David's Hall and required an early start from Merthyr Library where 12 keen readers
boarded the minibus. The day's aim of celebrating the enjoyment of reading and of opening up reading choices for individuals was a great success.

Readers had a chance to meet authors, such as Michael Jecks and Bernard Knight.  They experienced
readings from books with an Indian appeal.

For those with a sweet tooth, they came to the chocolate and reading sessions. Welsh speakers were entertained by award winning author Owen Martell, who talked about how he writes his books.

In the afternoon psychologist, television and radio contributor and Western Mail columnist "Mrs Motivator" shared her readers  top 10 list of humorous writings.  The winner - A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian by Marina Lewycka - is available from our library.

Television and radio actor Terrence Hardiman read clips from stories and discussed the process of making an audio story.

All in all it was a very successful day.  Merthyr Tydfil ticket purchasers were treated to a bonus bag of
chocolates generously donated by OP Chocolates!
