A counsellor recommends

Sometimes things overcome us, but it doesn't have to be like that because none of us are alone in our needs

We offer many books and other resources to help a range of situations linked to mental health and well-being.

Those titles include the national Bibliotherapy titles and many others and you can see more in the "Books to help" section here

This is the personal selection of Kim Miles, a local counsellor who works a good deal in the area.

She recommends the following titles...

  • Healing the hurt within – understand self-injury and self-harm, and heal the emotional wounds.by  Jan Sutton

    "This book gives insight into self harm. It is helpful to anyone who is interested in this subject, from people who self harm, their families and friends and also anyone who works with people who self harm."

 

  • Losing a child – explorations in grief by Linda Hurcombe.

    "This book offers support, information and practical advice for parents and is useful for family and friends to help them support the person who is grieving."

 

  • Silent grief – living in the wake of suicide by C. Lucas & H.M. Sneidon

    "This book explains grief and other emotions that people who lose someone through suicide experience. It is useful to people left behind and people who want to support them."

 

  • Freedom from addiction. by J Griffin & I Tyrell

    "This book gives clear guidance and practical steps to overcome addictive behaviours. It gives case histories covering all kinds of addictive behaviours."

 

  • Overcoming anxiety  by Helen Kennerly (a Bibliotherapy title) 

I know you have copies of this book. It is very popular. It gives useful advice and good self help tips including some Cognitive behavioural therapy tips. I have a copy of this at home."

 

  • Overcoming depression.by A: Dr. W Dryden & Sarah Opie

    "It briefly explains different types of depression and gives good insight and practical tips to help you through depression. I have a copy of this at home."

 

  • Relaxation. Exercises and inspirations for well-being by  Dr. S Brewer 

"This book provides practical exercises and techniques for taking tensions out of life including exercise, meditation, breathing techniques and meditation. This book could help anyone who has problems with their mental well-being."

 

  • It’s my life now – starting over after an abusive relationship or domestic violence by A: M Kennedy Dugan & R. R Hock

    "This book has accessible and practical information to help people who leave an abusive relationship put their life back together. It helps explain emotional difficulties also."

 

  • I would also recommend any books by Paul Mckenna or Louise Hay as a number of my previous clients have recommended these authors to me and have said that they are beneficial.
