Results of the 2003 summer pilot
- There was a national increase in juvenile swims of 108% compared to the recorded figures for the previous year.
- The scheme was remarkably successful in overcoming socio-economic barriers with some of the highest participation figures being recorded at pools within Community First areas.
- The total number of juvenile swims for the period increased from 387,000 in 2002 to 803,000 in 2003.
- 40% of parents felt that their children showed improvement in their swimming ability.
- 88% of pool managers thought that the pilot had been successful.
- The participation data clearly shows that the pilot was a great success in encouraging existing swimmers to do so more often, and it has also been successful in attracting those who do not normally swim on a regular basis. There are signs that the pilot has succeeded in encouraging children to be more active in the short term at least and this can only have a positive impact on the health of those children in the long term.
