RHYDYCAR CULTURAL PROJECT
The main recreational facility at Rhydycar is now around 30 years old, whilst the swimming pool at Gwaunfarren has seen some 80 years of municipal use. It is recognised that these 2 facilities are is urgent need of replacement in line with the Councils vision of providing 'Flagship leisure facilities fit for the 21st century'.
The key features of the initial proposals for a new centre are a new high-quality swimming pool and sports facility.A range of other commercial leisure uses, including a cinema, restaurants and a hotel may also form part of the complex, which is expected to be fully completed in three years.
The first phase of the project involved a feasibility study by Arup, the consultants working with the Council. They concluded that the best option for delivering the Council’s ambitious objectives was re-development rather than refurbishment of the aging Rhydycar Leisure Centre.
This first phase of the project is now complete and Phase 2 is underway. This involves detailed business planning, including consulting with the general public on their requirements and looking at different procurement options to build the new complex, together with an outline planning application.
The new sports and leisure complex will be a high-quality development attracting both local people and new visitors to the town. The convenient location, close to the town centre, builds on other development work being done, especially in the town centre, making Merthyr Tydfil a key destination for shopping and leisure.
The new complex also contributes to the delivery of the Council’s Vision to make Merthyr Tydfil a safe, healthy and exciting place to live and visit.
A final consultation day is to b held at the Civic Centre on Tuesday 7th December commencing at 10.00am.
