Sports Development

Grant Aid Opportunities

The unit via the sports development officer provides assistance to community groups, schools, clubs and individuals to access a variety of grant aid.

 

Over the past eighteen months should all project come to fruition this will have amounted to £6.7 million pounds worth of grant aid via the following schemes;

  • Sportlot Social Inclusion
  • Sportlot Capital Investment
  • Sportlot Community Chest
  • Community Chest Talented Athlete Scheme
  • Minor Grant Scheme
  • Sportsmatch
  • Clwb Cymru
  • Girls First Programme
  • NOF PE in Sport

Dragon Sport

Sports Council for Wales’s initiative to introduce children aged 7 –11 to an enjoyable and well-organised range of sports with clearly identified opportunities to feed into and progress through sports development programmes in clubs and the community.

 

The scheme involves the following sports;

  • Netball
  • Tennis
  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Hockey
  • Cricket

At present 23 primary/junior schools, 3 secondary schools, Merthyr College and six community clubs are involved with the initiative.

 

School Competitive Developments

The unit currently runs the following festivals and tournaments for Primary/junior schools; 

  • Mixed Football festivals
  • Girls Football festivals
  • Dragon sport festivals
  • Dragon sport Cricket festival
  • Rugby festival
  • Junior/Primary schools Netball league.

Coach Education

The unit provides coaches with the opportunity to access a variety of training opportunities by running some courses in house or accessing Governing Body courses in other areas these include;

  • Dragon Sports Leader Training
  • Community Sports Leaders Awards
  • Junior Sports Leader Awards
  • First aid courses
  • Football Leaders Awards
  • Preliminary Rugby Award
  • Child Protection Courses
  • Athletics Awards
  • Netball starting out course

Centres of Local Development

These centres provide enhanced coaching opportunities for children who wish to progress to a higher level. The unit currently organise the following centres;

  • 6 Football
  • 3 Rugby
  • 1 Cricket

Disability Sports Development

Initiative supported by Disability Sport Cymru in order to ensure equal opportunities for people with special needs to access sporting provision.

  • 1 new sports club established this year.

Cricket Development

The sports development officer is currently working closely with the local cricket clubs and coaches to develop winter coaching opportunities.

 

Play Schemes

The sports development officer is responsible for the

organisation of the summer holiday play provision.
