What is Council Tax Benefit?

Council Tax Benefit is a means tested benefit, which can help reduce any council tax liability that you may have.

Who can claim?

Anyone who has a Council Tax liability for a property they live in. The amount of benefit you can receive will depend on your income and the income of the people who live with you.

You can claim if you receive Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance, Guaranteed Pension Credit, as well as any other state benefits. You can also claim if you are working.

You will not qualify if you have savings and/or investments which total more than £16,000.

What is Housing Benefit?

Housing Benefit is a means tested benefit, which can help reduce any rent you have to pay to live in your home.

Who can claim?

Generally anyone who has a liability to pay rent for his or her home, although there are exceptions to this rule. Some of these are:

  • If you are paying rent to a close relative, e.g. a parent and you live in the same house as them
  • If your Landlord is the Father of one or all of your children
  • If your Landlord was previously your partner


We may not be able to pay Housing Benefit if:

  • You previously owned the property that you are now renting
  • You will not qualify if you have savings and/or investments which total more than £16,000.

If you wish to apply for Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit or both, you only need to complete one claim form.

When should you claim?

Now - delaying your application could mean a loss of benefit.
