Non-payment

When a new Council Tax Demand notice is issued, it indicates the amounts to be paid and dates when instalments must be made.

Should an instalment not be paid by the due date, a reminder notice will be issued. The reminder will state the amount required to be paid to bring your instalments up to date. You will have seven days to make the payment or the right to pay by instalments will be lost.

If you comply with the first reminder but subsequently miss another instalment, you will be sent a second reminder notice, but only two reminders will be sent in any financial year. Instalments are cancelled if a third instalment payment is missed and two reminders have been sent.

Once instalments have been cancelled, a further seven days will be given to pay the full balance otherwise a summons will be obtained. If an account reaches this stage, it is likely that substantial costs will be added to the outstanding balance.
