Home Improvement Assistance
Purpose of Assistance:
- To assist owner occupiers with major repairs and or emergency repairs up to a limit of £20,000 (any work required over this figure will be subject to an MSCA).
- To assist landlords with providing means of escape and fire precautions such as AFD systems, automatic sprinkler systems, energy efficiency work, security measures up to a maximum £10,000.
Conditions
There is a 10 year owner occupation certificate with a registered charge on the property, recoverable on sale or the certificate of occupation will be transferable on the death of the owner.
Home Repairs Assistance
Purpose of Assistance:
To provide assistance for those households at risk from accidents or whose health is most likely to be affected by poor housing conditions (such as faulty heating, severe damp, dangerous structural problems). To qualify you need to be 60 years of age or above, disabled or vulnerable (in receipt of income based JSA, DWA, Income Support or Council Tax Benefit). The maximum grant for individuals 74 and under is £3,000, and for anyone 75 or older it is £5,000.
Conditions
5 year grant condition of certificate of owner occupation with a condition that the grant assistance will be registered as a charge on the property recoverable on sale or the certificate of occupation will be transferable on the death of the owner. No further grant payable within 5 years.
Disabled Persons Assistance
Purpose of Assistance
To help disabled householders undertake adaptations to their homes to make them more suitable e.g. wheelchair ramps, lifts, showers. Owner occupiers and tenants qualify for this grant, which covers work additional to that of the mandatory disabled facilities grant system, small scale adaptations, ands assistance to a disabled person to move to a more suitable property up to a maximum of £15,000. The level of assistance is 100%, although this is means tested.

Healthy Homes Scheme
A cold damp home can lead to the deterioration of an existing health condition or the development of a new health problem. Healthy Homes in Merthyr Tydfil aims to reduce the number of people living in cold damp homes by raising awareness of fuel poverty and providing a single point for help. The scheme is run by South East Wales Energy Agency in partnership with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. Health Professionals, community and voluntary workers can refer clients to the scheme, or clients can self refer.

- Cavity and Loft Insulation
- Draft proofing
- Hot Water Tank Jackets
- Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

Home Energy Efficiency Scheme Plus (Welsh Assembly Government scheme)
To help qualifying home owners to make their homes warmer, more energy efficient and healthier. Pays for energy-efficiency work like loft insulation, draught-proofing, cavity wall insulation and central heating. If you are over 60, a lone parent, disabled with children under 16 you may qualify for a cash grant of up to £2700. For more information phone 01685 726208.
