Private Sector Housing Renewal Renewal Areas Within Merthyr Tydfil
Merthyr Tydfil is fortunate to have two entire wards officially declared as active Renewal Areas, these being Merthyr Vale Renewal Area and Dowlais Renewal Area. The Housing Renewal Team, in conjunction with its partners, is responsible for attracting funding for projects in these areas and strategically managing their implementation.
Whilst our primary focus is on improving local housing and subsequently health, we also undertake a wide range of other activities such as:
- Environmental Improvements
- Highway and Traffic Calming Improvements
- Improving energy efficiency in the home
- Home Security Schemes
- Provision of off street parking
- Landscaping
Such activities have helped stimulate local economies and trigger wider, sustainable regeneration.
Renewal Area status allows the Council to submit annual bids to the Welsh Assembly Government to assist with financing ongoing and proposed projects.
Between 2000/1 - 2008/9 the Housing Renewal Team has successfully bid for, and received £14,355,000 worth of additional money to support the County Borough's Renewal Areas. WAG_Funding.pdf
Group Repair Schemes
This is the primary method of improving private sector homes within Renewal Areas adopted by the Council. Group Repair Schemes are effectively "enveloping schemes". Grant assistance is provided by the Council to renovate the external envelope of properties in a street or terrace. This form of grant assistance is not applied for in the traditional way. Officers of the Council, in conjunction with the local elected members, decide which streets and properties are to have the opportunity to participate in such schemes. A weighting exercise is undertaken to identify which streets require the work most and which schemes would have the most positive impact on the surrounding area.
Eligible works which may be undertaken via a Group Repair Scheme include: new PVCu windows and doors, new external render or sandblasting & pointing of original stonework, new roofs and PVCu rainwater goods.
