How do I end my tenancy?

Although we require four weeks notice to end a tenancy, we are prepared to accept seven days written notice provided that the following steps are taken:

1.      The notice must be signed and dated

2.      The notice will expire on a Monday and must be received at least seven days prior to the expiry date

3.      The notice will contain your new address

What shall I do with the keys?

Two front door keys, two back door keys and two storeroom keys (where applicable), should be handed in to the Housing Division on the day the notice expires, which will be a Monday.  Failure to do this will result in an additional weeks rent being charged for every week that the keys are late.  If the required amount of keys are not handed in, you will be charged for the cost of new locks to the property.

What should I do before I hand in my keys to the property?

  • Make sure that there are no unauthorised alterations undertaken to the property
  • Remove all furniture, possessions and carpets
  • Leave the property in a clean and tidy condition
  • Remove all unwanted items, and do not leave rubbish in the garden
  • Advise the gas and electricity boards and ensure meter readings are taken
  • Disconnect your telephone
  • Advise the Royal Mail

What if my rent account is not clear?

If you have not paid your rent in full at the end of your tenancy, then we will invoice you for the arrears which must be cleared within 28 days or the debt will be referred on to a debt collection agency.

Please note that any work, which the Council have to undertake prior to reletting the property, which is the tenant’s responsibility, will be carried out by the Council on the basis that the tenant will meet the cost in full.
