What is sheltered housing?

These are warden-controlled schemes that are available to those individuals over 50 years of age.

What is the role of the warden?

The purpose of the warden is to act as a 'good neighbour', but they are not employed to administer drugs or provide nursing care.  Each morning the warden will 'call' their residents using the intercom system.  However, they will only call those residents who have requested it.  The warden is provided with a master key to each property within their scheme, although this must only be used to enter a property in an emergency.

If the warden is off duty or on holiday, the Control Room will respond to any queries.

How do I apply for accommodation?

Interested applicants will need to complete a Sheltered Housing application form which is available from Housing Advice, Civic Centre, Castle Street, Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 8AN.  Tel: (01685) 725000.

How many schemes do you have?

We have six schemes and 195 units throughout the County Borough.

What facilities are available?

Each complex has a community hall, where social activities take place, which include coffee mornings, fish & chip nights, bingo, talks and Christmas parties.  Whilst these activities help to prevent loneliness, they are not compulsorily.

The Area Housing Officer will provide sheltered surgeries which also take place in the community hall.  These can be used to discuss outstanding repairs, or  problems with rent or housing benefit.

We currently have schemes at:

  • Cae'r Wern, Ynysfach
  • Greenwood Close, Twynyrodyn
  • Haven Close, Troedyrhiw
  • Horeb close, Penydarren
