Legal DivisonThe Legal Division is a small team of six dedicated professional individuals who provide a quality, effective and efficient in-house legal service.
The Legal Division is responsible directly to the Director of Customer Corporate Services – Mr Gareth Chapman.
The Legal Division is primarily responsible for:
- Ensuring propriety
- Providing corporate legal advise i.e. advising Councillors and Directorates both of the likely impact of legislative changes and of the legal implications of their proposals whether or not specifically requested to do so, validating policy proposals in the context of the Council’s statutory powers, advising generally on the council’s legal position and assisting with the many procedural and policy points that arise in the course of the Council’s work; and
- Providing legal services to the Council and it’s Directorates which involves processing and advising on specific legal issues in response to instructions received. Such issues arise from property, highways and planning matters to contract, civil and criminal litigation, housing, environmental and public health, trading standards, leisure, social services and education.
