Built Heritage & Conservation The heritage of Merthyr Tydfil is an integral part of the County Borough. The Conservation team play an important role in the management of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough’s historic assets, and provide information and service in the following areas:
LISTED BUILDINGS Listed Buildings are protected by law and are an integral part of our cultural heritage. There are over 200 Listed Buildings in the County Borough ranging from Aberfan War Memorial to Zoar Chapel!
CONSERVATION AREAS A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest, allowing protection to the fabric of what makes an area unique.
SCHEDULED ANCIENT MONUMENTS Scheduled Ancient Monuments are protected by law as they are of national significance. These can range from war memorials to former blast furnaces. The Borough has approximately 50 Scheduled Monuments.
MERTHYR TYDFIL BUILT HERITAGE STRATEGY Merthyr Tydfil has a rich cultural heritage, and the Heritage Strategy was commissioned in order to improve the way in which our heritage assets are managed.
