The landscape of Merthyr Tydfil has a history of being mistreated and abused, and perhaps for this reason some people take it for granted. However, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough supports a diverse range of rich and varied habitats and species. Important habitats include open heathland, rhos pasture, ancient hedgerows, native woodlands, rivers, streams, ponds and neutral grassland. Even old waste tips from the mining era have become an important regionally characteristic ecological feature due to the unique lichen heath that develops there. Important local species include internationally protected fauna such as otters, great crested newts and marsh fritillary butterfly.
In the Countryside Section of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council we deal with landscape design and improvement, countryside planning issues, such as Tree Preservation Order and Protected Species legislation, biodiversity and nature conservation. We feel that one of the most valuable assets which Merthyr possesses is its natural heritage, and that it is important for people who live and work in Merthyr to value it.
