Unfit Properties

The reduction in the provision of council housing has increased interest in private house lettings, some of it at the poorer end of the market. Also some private owned housing is in such a poor state of repair to be unfit for the occupiers or to be causing a nuisance to neighbours.

The Environmental Protection Section of the Public Health Department enforce legislation to ensure dwellings are fit for the occupiers to live in and that the properties state of repair does not affect adjoining properties, for example by way of penetrating damp, by requiring landlords to undertake repairs and improvements.

The Section is responsible for ensuring that all privately owned housing stock is kept in beneficial use and in such a state of repair as to be fit for human habitation and provide adequate accommodation. This involves encouraging owners and occupiers to properly maintain their homes.

Housing work also extends to the licensing of caravan and camping sites and the protection of tenants from illegal eviction and harassment by their landlords.
