For a number of years the Welsh Assembly Government (W.A.G.)  have invited local authorities in Wales to present bids for Safer Routes to School Schemes.

Examples of schemes introduced in the County Borough are Gwaunfarren, Bedlinog and Trelewis. See photos above.

The W.A.G. criteria for such bids is as follows:

  • Projects must demonstrate active co-operation between schools, parents, teachers and local authorities in determining the approach to reducing car journeys to the school.
  • Able to demonstrate how work on a project will result in safer communities.
  • W.A.G. will give a higher priority to projects that demonstrate enhancement of local communities generally, paying regard to road safety issues.
