Mis-described Furniture For Sale

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council Trading Standards Department has recently become aware that there is a possibility of unsafe and mis-described furniture being supplied to Merthyr Tydfil residents and would like to issue a warning of Itinerant Traders who are currently going door to door selling furniture in and around the South Wales valleys.

The Itinerant Traders have been operating in various areas across the South Wales Valleys and a number of 3 piece suites have been seized and individuals have been arrested. It is suspected that the furniture will fail flammability tests and is not genuine leather as they are being described.

Only last week furniture was offered to a Merthyr Tydfil resident for £300 in Edwardsville, they then moved on to a local public house.

Councillor, Brendan Toomey, said ‘We are warning Merthyr Tydfil residents to be on their guard if they are approached and asked to purchase furniture. Previous experiences have shown that such furniture fails flammability safety requirements and is often mis-described as leather when it is not’.

Because of the obvious safety and misdecription issues the council is warning consumers not to get involved in such transactions. If you become aware of such activities in Merthyr Tydfil please contact Your Local Trading Standards Services on 08454 040506.
