War on Waste
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s War on Waste (WOW) Kerbside Recycling Scheme is being extended to include approximately 95% of the households within the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil. The WOW Kerbside Recycling Scheme is being introduced to the Gurnos and Galon Uchaf areas and means that an additional 3000 properties will be targeted from the end of September.
The WOW collections allow householders to recycle Glass, Cans, Plastic Bottles, Textiles, Newspaper, Magazines and Junk Mail. All householders in these areas will be receiving a letter and two bags to start the scheme. Anyone wishing to take part must put out the materials on the first day of collection.
Waste Management Education Officer, Frances O’Brien said “By recycling more, families could reduce their household waste by 60%, everyone can do their bit to make a difference. All we ask is that you put out the materials in carrier bags, within the provided plastic bag. Particpating householders will then receive a recycling box so that they may continue with the scheme. ”
Councillor Bill Smith, who fully supports this scheme said, “It costs the community a large amount of money to dispose of rubbish, and by, supporting this recycling initiative the community can help avoid the penaltites that we will incur if we do not reach our recycling targets. There is currently a 44% take up in the scheme in other areas of Merthyr Tydfil, and we are hoping that this figure will improve with the introduction in to these areas. Last year we recycled 15.4% of our waste, and we aim to reach our recycling target of 25% by 2006/07.
The Collections will take place on a fortnightly basis, householders are asked to put the box at the point of normal refuse collection by 7am.
