Connect2 Bridge Sustrans Connect2 is a UK-wide project that will create new cycling and walking routes to improve local travel in 79 communities across the country and won their bid for £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund.
Led by the Regeneration Department, the Trevithick Trail will benefit from a share of this £50 million, which will go towards building a bridge over the busy A4060 Trunk Road. The bridge will create a traffic-free route connecting the residential areas of Pentrebach and communities further south to local supermarkets and workplaces and provide an attractive largely level route into the centre of Merthyr Tydfil with links to the Taff Trail.
MTCBC is currently working with Sustrans for design concepts and working with the European and External Funding Team to get match funding to ensure the project is delivered to an exceptional standard. With thanks to local residents who voted and supported the scheme, the regeneration department intends on ensuring the project is delivered with a heavy focus on community involvement.
Following a marketing campaign and support from communities, Connect2 beat off competition from the Eden Project, Sherwood Forest and the Black Country Urban Park, by winning almost half of the total votes through a massive telephone and internet voting campaign.
John Grimshaw, Sustrans CEO said: “We are delighted that Sustrans’ Connect2 has proved itself the peoples’ favourite in the public vote and won the £50million from the Big Lottery Fund. We are immensely grateful to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and everyone who got behind this scheme to make their votes count”.
