Gurnos Shopping Centre Built nearly half a century ago in the 1960s, the Gurnos Shopping Centre today is in evident need of refurbishment.
It is well known that the Gurnos is one of the most deprived localities in Wales however with this exciting development, the Gurnos may be seeing the beginning of what could escalate into a larger regeneration programme for the area.
At present the flats has potential society risks and the shop units do not meet the needs for the locality. Suffering years of negative impacts of crime and anti-social behavior, the physical image of the Town centre has seriously deteriorated. This also applies to the flats which have been vacant for nine years. The works include the creation of a new car park and a transformation of the existing block of flats by converting the building to office accommodation. There will also be improvements to the existing shopping centre including re-cladding of existing buildings, newly designed roof, external stairways installed and the erection of extensions to the shop units.
This particular regeneration project will aim to refresh the town landscape and encourage community involvement and ownership of the project and the refurbishment of the shopping centre will enhance local facilities and allow businesses to expand.
