Trevithick Trail The Trevithick Trail is a 15.2km walking and cycling heritage path following the original tramroad route used by Richard Trevithick’s world-first steam locomotive to haul loads on rails in 1804.
The nine mile route has the potential to be a major South Wales tourist attraction which will encourage healthy lifestyles through sport and leisure participation, promote sustainable transport methods and compliment safe routes to schools and railway stations. The trail will also contribute to the local economy by fostering sustainable economic growth and supporting businesses along the route.
The diversity of the project ensures an attractive natural and historic environment for residents and visitors to enjoy enhanced leisure activities with the added advantage of circular links to the Taff Trail. The project strongly advocates community involvement at all stages and creating strong tourism links to become a catalyst for inward investment and draw visitor spend to the local economy.
Key activities to date include Glamorgan Gates commissioning and citing artwork, full scale clean up events with Keep Wales Tidy, The Trevithick Open Day and the Mayors Elect nominating the trail for Probation Service Centenary celebrations. Most recently, the trail won a slice of £50 million with the winning Peoples Millions scheme Sustrans Connect2.
