Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre
Treharris Town Centre
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough has a proud and fascinating history. At its heart, the Town Centre of Merthyr Tydfil is the commercial, social and retail epicenter of the County Borough, and is emerging as the regional centre of the Heads of the Valleys region. The town also has a growing role as a tourist destination, ideally placed with its links to Cardiff, the Brecon Beacons National Park, and further afield.
In October 2002 the Town Centre Strategic Framework and Action Plan, “The Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil” was produced by consultant’s URBED. This set out a new vision for Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre as the basis for an ongoing programme of public and private sector investment, to secure sustainable regeneration for the town.
The Physical Regeneration Team strives to take forward the programme of regeneration activity and acts as a catalyst to regenerating the County Borough as a whole. Delivery of the various action programmes is being achieved through the auspices of the Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre Partnership, www.merthyrtydfil.org.uk .This brought together key stakeholders with an interest in the town centre and provides a forum for discussing the various plans and proposals and for reporting on their progress.
Outside the town centre, the physical regeneration team has taken a proactive role in supporting and initiating a range of regeneration activity with key partners within and outside the local authority. Recently completed is the Taff Bargoed Strategy, which includes a strategic landscape strategy and action plan for the Taff Bargoed Valley. And also the development, design and implementation of the Gurnos Town Centre project.
