Regeneration Grants
Grants
The following range of grants is provided to assist with the costs of improving, refurbishing, converting and extending eligible properties within the County Borough. These relate to the various grant regimes administered by the Council’s Regeneration Team, in support of its core regeneration work.
Advice can also be provided on other potential sources of grant assistance for example the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and the Welsh Assembly Government as well as informal advice on design matters in relation to individual projects.
Industrial Improvement Grants
These grants primarily relate to manufacturing or specialist service companies across the County Borough. Eligible companies must also be S. M. E’s. (i.e. have fewer than 250 employees.)
The grant is to support capital expenditure on the conversion, improvement, extension of industrial buildings and their operational environment. The maximum grant will be £25,000 or 50% of the project costs, whichever is lower.

WAG Town Improvement Grant (TIG)
TIG offers funding to the private sector in order to enable a project, which may otherwise not proceed, to fruition. It is limited to properties within Merthyr Tydfil town centre. This initiative is funded by the WAG but administered by the County Borough Council. The level of funding support, however, will normally be limited to a maximum of 50% of the eligible costs. Grant assisted works include those undertaken to the exterior and curtilage of buildings which will make a significant contribution to the general environmental enhancement of the area. Associated professional fees are also grant eligible.
Davies Sutton Architecture Building Enhancement Study
The purpose of the Building Enhancement Grant Scheme is to provide financial assistance to owners/occupiers of buildings within the town centre of Merthyr Tydfil to restore the traditional character of individual properties and to consider, as a priority those buildings identified for refurbishment within the Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre Building Enhancement Study, undertaken by consultant’s Davies Sutton Architecture in 2003.
The Study identified a programme of building enhancements within defined areas of the town centre, focused on buildings considered to be of inappropriate design or poor condition, with suggestions on how these might be improved. To assist in this process a series of suggested proposals with cost schedules have been produced for individual properties, to which applicants for grant assistance will be expected to comply. Copies of the study are available from the Regeneration Project Manager.
