Cancer has many causes, and not all of them are known. Sometimes there is no clear reason why cancer develops. Certain cancers, like breast cancer, may be hereditary, meaning they can run in families.

A report by the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit, September 2006 entitled, Cancer in Wales 1992 -2006: A Comprehensive Report shows that Merthyr Tydfil has significantly higher rates of cancer registrations for all malignancies [except skin] although there are great variations in the types of cancer reported.
