High Street Regeneration


Update 20th August (2008)

Rain has continued to hamper progress. However paving has been laid outside the new shop at the south end of the High Street and is awaiting grouting.

Excavations from Amazon Clothing to Burtons has been completed with concrete foundations in place, There is some work still be undertaken outside Burtons.

Excavations at the Victoria Street junction, outside Littlewoods Catalogue Shop, are nearing completion. It is anticipated that the kerbs will be in place shortly

Update 15th August (2008)

Rain has continued to affect progress again. Another cellar has been discovered at Burtons and we are awaiting engineering advice on dealing with this.

Concrete has been poured outside the new shop at the south end of the High Street and paving will commence shortly.

At the top end of the High Street paving  has been completed outside Lloyd's Bank and Amazon Clothing and Shoes. While excavations of the area have continued south to Burtons.

Update 12th August (2008)

Rain has affected the progress of paving, along with the discovery of a cellar outside Greggs. We are now awaiting engineering advice on construction of the paving over this cellar.

Paving has been laid and grouted to the drainage channel outside the new shop at the south end of the High Street. We are now awaiting concrete to be poured in the area from the drainage channel to the shop front.

The footways from Amazon Shoes to the edge of Burtons Menswear have been excavated. Laying of the pavements outside Amazon Clothing has commenced.

Update 8th August (2008)

Paving has been completed outside Walters Photo and Video, and now progresses north.

Concrete has been laid  for the drainage channel outside the new shop at the south end of the High Street.

Concrete has been poured on the footway outside part of Lloyd's Bank and Amazon clothing in preparation for paving.

Preparations have been made for the concreting of the roadway outside Burtons.

Update 4th August (2008)

Paving outside Central Cafe and Discount Price Store has been grouted and opened to the public. Excavations on the opposite side of the street are still underway, with paving outside Priceless Shoes now complete.

Work has commenced on laying the concrete foundations outside the new store to the south of the High Street next to the Salvation army.

Update 29th July (2008)

Paving has been laid from Central Cafe to Discount Price Store and is awaiting grouting.

Excavations continue north from Greggs.

Concrete laying at the loading bay on Tramroadside has been delayed due to problems with gradient levels which our engineers are trying to resolve.

Update 24th July (2008)

Paving has been laid outside Brighthouse Electrical store, and Central Cafe this is awaiting grouting.

From Priceless Shoes to Greggs the Bakers has been excavated and will continue to be excavated up the street  towards McDonald's.

New litter bins have been placed throughout the scheme also.

The new drainage system from Lloyd's Bank to McDonald's is now operational and paving will commence shortly.

Update 22nd July (2008)

A progress meeting was held yesterday with the consultants Camlin Lonsdale and our contractors The Landscape Group.

Paving has been laid, grouted and opened to the public outside Specsavers. Paving has also been laid adjacent to this to the entrance to Brighthouse Electrical store, and will be opened to the public shortly.

The paving of the roadway outside Amazon has been completed and excavation of the footway is now taking place.

Excavation of the loading bay at Lloyd's Bank has been completed and is awaiting concrete.

Update 18th July (2008)

Work has been completed outside the Orange store and Brynmore Williams Butchers. There is a small area surrounding the electricity supply store that needs to be completed.

Work is also reaching a conclusion at the side of High Street Chapel where a small amount of paving remains to be laid to join the High Street and the path to the Hollies Health Centre.

Paving has been laid to the front of Specsavers and will continue to move north along High Street.

Update 15th July (2008)

Repaving outside the Orange store has been 50% completed and work to the butchers is imminent. Again the heavy showers have affected the laying of the granite sets as the water compromises the bedding materials the granite sits upon..

Re-paving with the granite will also commence this week to the front of Priceless Shoes.

Excavation of the new loading bay in Tramroadside North, adjacent to Lloyd's Bank has also commenced

Update 10th July (2008)

The inclement weather has slightly hindered progress this week. Work to the re-paving outside Brynmore Williams Butchers are still be undertaken.

The area in front of Gus Jones jewelers has been completed after problems with an electrical fault were resolved. 

Excavation has taken place outside the new building at the south of High Street adjacent to the Salvation Army.

Work resumes with the laying of the roadway outside Burtons after engineers resolved difficulties that arose from different levels of the street meeting.

Update 8th July (2008)

A progress meeting was held yesterday with the contractors. Western Power completed the outstanding works to the front of the Orange store and Brynmore Williams Butchers. This section is now being prepared for paving and weather pending should be complete by the end of the week.

Work continues to progress in the remaining pedestrian area of the High Street, north of Specsavers.

 

Update 3rd (July 2008)

An information stand will be located in the Farmers Market on Friday July 4th. Council officers will be on hand to answer your queries and provide information.

Western Power will be on site this Sunday (July 6th) to undertake work to the electricity supply located outside the Orange store. Once this has been completed paving of this area will be undertaken.

 

Update (30th June 2008) 

The environmental works to the High Street are nearing completion. Works to the High Street pedestrian area have nearly been completed from Specsavers south to Sunflowers Café, with Market Square also nearing completion The contractors have confirmed that works will be completed by Summer 2008.

 

In areas where improvement works have been completed a marked difference can now be seen in the town centre. Lamp posts have been removed, with new street lighting now mounted onto several buildings following the helpful co-operation of building owners.  

 

A seating area has been created in Market Square, with several solid granite benches being installed – all inscribed with quotes from prominent local people and lit at night.

 

Works additional to the original contract, due to be undertaken on the trafficked route of the upper High Street, have been delayed.  The contractors have advised that re-surfacing of pavements and the creation of a loading bay at Lloyds Bank are also due for completion summer 2008.
