Town Centre Conservation Area

A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest.  This means that when a conservation area is designated, the Council has recognised that the area has a special character and identity which is worth protecting.

The Council is required by legislation to preserve or enhance the character of each conservation area and all new proposals which affect that special character have to be considered in the light of this requirement.

Merthyr Tydfil CBC will be designating the historic core of Merthyr Tydfil, from Pontmorlais to St. Tydfil’s Church as a Conservation Area.  The Town Centre contains a variety of architectural styles and materials, with details relating to the late Classical, Gothic Revival and Edwardian Baroque movements.  It contains a concentration of 23 Listed Buildings, a number of Locally Listed Buildings and street frontages while becoming a hub of social, commercial, civic and spiritual activity.  The Conservation Area is important in displaying Merthyr Tydfil’s development between the late 18th and early 20th centuries.

A full Character Appraisal and Townscape Appraisal Plan, displaying the  boundary, has been prepared and formed part of this public consultation.

These documents can be found in the Resource Section

Merthyr Tydfil CBC has approved the Town Centre Conservation Area and we are currently awaiting confirmation from the Welsh Assembly Governement of the designation.
