Summary of Protocol & Advice

 

The Mayor is the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil’s First Citizen and with this position holds a high profile role in maintaining and promoting the interests of the Borough and its People.  The Mayor also Chairs Full Council Meetings.

 

The Local Government Act 1972 states that the Mayor of the County Borough shall have precedence in the County Borough over all but members of the Royal Family or the Lord Lieutenant, who is a representative of the Royal Family.

 

When inviting the Mayor to an event it is essential that each invitation is put in writing at least six weeks before the date.  You address the letter to His Worship the Mayor, Councillor (name) then Dear Mr Mayor.

 

Each invitation is discussed with the Mayor and a reply will be sent within ten working days.

 

Upon the Mayor’s acceptance of an invitation, the Mayoral Officer will issue a written confirmation and will ask that a Civic Pro forma is completed and returned, this can be obtained from the Mayoral Office. This form is used to ascertain essential details for the Mayor’s information, such as the nature of the event, parking arrangements for the Civic Car, code of dress and whether or not a speech is required.
