School - teenage pregnancy

Schools should work with the Local Authority to provide appropriate support for the pupil and also after the baby is born. This should be aimed at keeping the pupil in education wherever possible, and to return to full-time education as soon as possible after the birth of the child, with appropriate childcare support. Pregnancy is not a justifiable reason for exclusion from school and health and safety should not be used as a reason to prevent a pregnant pupil from attending school.

No more than 18 calendar weeks authorised absence is allowed to cover the period immediately before and after the birth of the child. Absence for the ante-natal classes, and if the baby is ill, should be classed as ‘authorised’.

The education of school aged pupils is normally supported through the school, but if alternative education is considered more appropriate then a young person can be referred to the Schools Department.
