Waste
The demanding requirements of the National Waste Strategy and EU Directives have resulted in a shift from sending waste to landfill to managing it in a more sustainable manner. This new approach requires waste to be reduced at source and then treated as resource through re-use, recycling, composting and energy recovery. This has inevitably resulted in the need for new waste management facilities that can process the various waste streams.
The Local Development Plan (LDP) contains a land allocation for a new civic amenity site in Treharris (Policy AS8: Replacement civic amenity site) and two further waste policies, namely, Policies AS7 and TB10, which seek to steer new waste facilities to the most appropriate locations.
Policy AS7 (Waste management facilities – locations of choice) identifies B2 ‘general industrial’ sites as areas of search for waste management facilities and safeguards Trecatti landfill site for unavoidable waste.
Policy TB10 (Waste management facilities) is criteria-based and applies to both new and expanded in-building and open-air waste management facilities. The new civic amenity site, areas of search and Trecatti landfill site are shown on the LDP Proposals Map.
